Excerpt

“I hear that a lot. Just don’t tell Kevin that. I don’t think he likes us being compared to each other much.” I can relate to that to some extent. I have two siblings, and I absolutely hated it whenever someone told me how much better my brother or sister were.

“Then he won’t get a peep out of me,” I say. He laughs at that, and we begin to chat. We stick to easy topics like interests and hobbies, and I quickly learn that this guy is really easy to talk to and get along with. He even tells me a little bit about his stay in the hospital.

He’s been in this hospital for a long time now, and I don’t have the courage to ask him about his condition. We’ve been talking for nearly ten minutes when the man suddenly stops in the middle of a thought and gives me a conspiratorial smile.

“I just realized that we don’t know what to call each other,” he says with a wry smile. “I’m Michael.”

“Kelly,” I introduce myself, and just barely manage to stop myself from offering a handshake.

“Oh, are you Kimberly’s friend?” For a moment I gape at him, not understanding how the hell he’d know that, but then the pieces fall into place. This is the patient Kimberly fell in love with. How did I not realize that when he told me he was Kevin’s brother?

“I am,” I say, feeling a little self-conscious. “Kimberly must have talked about me sometimes, I guess.”

“More like all the time.” He laughs. “I can tell you two are an excellent pair of friends, and you really mean a lot to her.” I can feel myself starting to blush, and wonder what, exactly, Kimberly told him.

“If it means anything, Kimberly’s told me about you as well,” I say, trying to divert the conversation away from myself.

“Kimberly talks about me?” Michael sounds confused, but he gives me an intrigued look,  and I suddenly realize that a misunderstanding here can get Kimberly into a lot of trouble.

“She hasn’t told me any details, of course,” I try to clarify. “She’s never revealed any personal information to me, and I didn’t even know your name until now, I swear.”

“What?” Michael asks. He looks even more confused.
